Bath

May 24, 2025

The book tour continued on Monday in Bath which in my humble opinion is one of the three most remarkable cities in Britain (the others being Edinburgh and York).

I had two books published last year and am promoting both which can be confusing. I arrived at Waterstones (one of the Lit Fest venues) expecting to talk about my Harold Wilson biography but the programme had me talking about the third book in my ‘Mangan’ trilogy, ‘Death on the Thames’. My superb interviewer, Tim, had read both books and was able to segway elegantly from one to the other.

The first of my ‘Mangan’ novels in 2021 was dedicated to my English teacher at school, Peter Carlin, who convinced me I could write and told me not to stop writing stories once I left school. I knew he lived in Bath, was a great age and probably too frail to come into the centre of town for my event. What I didn’t know was that his wife Pat would be there. I met her for the first time in the book signing queue . She’s done many things in her life but came to Bath to teach at the University as a criminologist! It was lovely to meet her and to learn of our shared interest in crime.
