I find it incredible that Harold Wilson was Chancellor of Bradford University whilst also serving as Prime Minister.
Granted Chancellor is a ceremonial position but there are plenty of ceremonies and Harold apparently turned up to most.
This year marks the University’s 60th anniversary. It owed its existence to Wilson’s HE reforms that implemented the Robbins Report of 1963. By the end of that decade the number of universities in Britain had more than doubled. Higher Education was no longer the preserve of a privileged elite.
On stage with me and the acting Vice Chancellor at Bradford, Nick Braisby, was the Chancellor’s gown worn by Harold snd retired when his stint ended in 1985.
Nick and I discussed Wilson’s life, his impact on HE and other achievements before taking questions from a knowledgeable audience.
