Old Fire Station – Carlisle

Alan Johnson will be interviewed on stage about his political career, his musical passions and becoming a bestselling author later in life. He will also talk about his latest book, a biography on ‘Harold Wilson,’ which will be available to buy on the night.
After the in-conversation part of the night, Alan will be taking question from the audience, so have a good think about what you’d like to know. He’ll then be staying to personally sign any books you’d like to buy.
From very humble beginnings and having been orphaned at 13, Alan Johnson rose through the Post Office ranks ultimately becoming the Union’s General Secretary.
In 1997 he was unexpectedly elected as Labour MP for Hull West and Hessle. In his time at Westminster he held six ministerial appointments including Secretary of State for Education and Skills, Health and the Home Secretary. Tipped as a future party leader Alan declined the opportunity to stand against Gordon Brown in 2007.
Following the end of his parliamentary career in 2017, Alan embarked on writing memoirs charting his childhood through to his time in Parliament. These 4 volumes all became best sellers and paved for the way for yet another career where he is continuing to excel as a writer of thriller and crime fiction.
Often described as the best Prime Minister we never had, his is a story of achievement in the face of adversity.
