Chipping Camden

May 14, 2019

Noon on Saturday and I’m with John Sutherland discussing George Orwell at the Chipping Camden Literary Festival.
John is Emeritus Professor of Modern English Literature at University College London. The author of very many books he is a leading expert on Victorian literature and a former Chair of Judges for the Man Booker Prize.

In 2016 his book ‘Orwell’s Nose’ was published. It is a brilliant biography of the great man with a particular emphasis on Orwell’s ability to describe the many smells he encountered in books such as ‘Down and Out in Paris and London’ and ‘Road to Wigan Pier’.
My introduction to Orwell is described in ‘This Boy’ which ironically won the Orwell Prize. I was also Orwell’s champion on Matthew Parris’s R4 series Great Lives but the Orwell link that brought me to this discussion with John at Chipping Camden is the introduction I wrote for ‘Orwell on Truth’ the pocket compendium produced by Penguin Random House a few years ago.

It’s a privilege to listen to John and to participate in this event.
