From very humble beginnings and having been orphaned at 13, Alan Johnson secured a place at Grammar School. Aged 18 and having one eye on a serious music career he became a postman before rising through their system to become a Communication Workers Union official and ultimately becoming the Union’s General Secretary.

In 1997 he was unexpectedly elected as Labour MP for Hull West and Hessle. In his time at Westminster he held six ministerial appointments including Secretary of State for Education and Skills, Health and the Home Secretary. Tipped as a future party leader Alan declined the opportunity to stand against Gordon Brown in 2007.

Following the end of his parliamentary career in 2017, Alan embarked on writing memoirs charting his childhood through to his time in Parliament. These 4 volumes all became best sellers and paved for the way for yet another career where he is continuing to excel as a writer of thriller and crime fiction.

Often described as the best Prime Minister we never had, his is a story of achievement in the face of adversity.

Alan will be in conversation with Paul Musgrave to discuss all aspects of his life and roles past and present.
