Fowey Literary Festival

May 15, 2025

My sister Linda is over from Australia, where she’s lived since the early 80s. On Monday we picked her up in London to make the long journey down to Fowey (pronounced Foy) for the literary festival inspired originally by Daphne du Maurier who lived in this wonderful part of Cornwall.

It was another Daphne who interviewed me – Daphne Skinnard from BBC Radio Cornwall. Last year we talked about my novel ‘Death on the Thames’; this year we discussed my biography of Harold Wilson.

Harold is buried on one of the Scilly Isles, 24 miles off the Cornish coast. So, having appeared in Huddersfield on Sunday, I’d travelled from where Wilson was born, almost to where he was buried, between Sunday and Monday evening, picking up a sister en route. The first photograph is of me and Linda outside the glorious Harbour Hotel; the second is of me and Daphne on stage before a full house in the Town Hall.
