The first of our ‘Harold Wilson, the Beatles and Me’ shows took place on February 11th at the East Riding Theatre in Beverley.
This was a home fixture for me but not for the other half of the double act, the brilliant Andrew Wilson who travelled to Yorkshire from the deep south.
The theatre was sold out and as usual (this was my third appearance in Beverley) the staff at the theatre were a delight to work with.
We played some music, did some readings, told some jokes and talked (mainly) about the 1960’s, that incredible decade in which mods and rockers, the Profumo scandal, the Great Train Robbery, England’s World Cup victory and huge societal change were played out to a Lennon, McCartney and occasionally, Harrison soundtrack.
Harold Wilson was as dominant politically throughout that period as the Beatles were musically. Drawing on my biography of Wilson and my music memoir (‘In My Life’) we spent the evening reminiscing as well as having a whale of a time as, judging by their reaction, did the audience.
