‘I recounted my childhood visit to Hull in ‘This Boy’. My mother travelled up to see her younger sister, Dolly, who, like her, had left Liverpool for London to join the NAAFI during the war. Our uncle Les, a soldier from Hull, was originally our mother’s boyfriend. Dolly nicked him off her causing an estrangement that lasted for a decade. Lily (our mother) took me and Linda with her to Hull as part of the peace process. Anyway, this article allowed me to eulogise about my adopted City. The last bit should have read ‘the warmth and comfort of a Hull Train’ but a sub-editor, failing to realise that Hull has it’s own ‘open network’ rail operator, changed it to ‘inter-city’, a designation that vanished a generation ago! ‘
