Much Wenlock

February 4, 2019

To Shropshire,  A.E. Houseman country, for the first date on my 2019 theatre tour.

It’s in a lovely performance space called The Edge which has operated out of a local school in Much Wenlock since 2010.

Carolyn has ensured that a local bookshop is supported at every venue on the tour and in this photo Anna Dreda and her assistant from Wenlock Books stand with me beside a table of my books.

After the show my interviewer (the witty Andrew Wilson), Carolyn and I accept an invitation to visit the George and Dragon, a 17th Century pub on Wenlock High Street.

The invite is from Robin and Catherine, the lovely couple who stepped in to save the pub from extinction, despite running their own software company. Robin’s dad drank at the G&D as did his grandad. He and his wife have saved a crucial asset for the local community and it was a delight to sit in their atmospheric pub, all nooks and crannies,  where it’s still possible to enjoy a pint of mild – a drink that was ubiquitous in my youth but is difficult to find today.
