The last time I was in Whitstable was five years ago. Victoria Falconer, the woman who has drawn a host of writers to her home town, now has pop-up events rather than a single festival. Carolyn and I braved Storm Darragh for a wonderful evening on December 7th. Here I am being interviewed by actor Paul Nolan in front of a wonderful audience blown in by the wind. We talked about ‘Death on the Thames’, ‘Harold Wilson; Twentieth Century Man’ and life inside and outside politics. Paul was so meticulous that he even gave me the chance to talk about my doomed attempt to become pop sensation in my teens! The thing about Whitlit is that Victoria ensures it’s a family affair with Mum, Linda (who was at school with my sister), husband, brother and sister-in-law all involved. And she looks after her writers. After the event she treated Carolyn and I to a sumptuous meal at The Sportsman, the Michelin starred restaurant just along the Kent coast at Seasalter. For anyone able to get to this wonderful corner of the Garden of England, a trip to this amazing restaurant will make your journey worthwhile.
