Chalke is the Glastonbury of book festivals. Focussed primarily on history, it embraces memoir, biography and other non-fiction genres. Many festival goers camp in tents across Wiltshire’s lovely Chalke Valley and there was even the history equivalent of a rock star in Tom Holland, who gave a lecture on the Roman historian Suetonius just before my event.
An audience of around 300 at 8.30 on a Tuesday evening may not match the crowds for a Glastonbury headliner but it was good enough for me – and Harold.
